Alex DeWaal urges pragmatism in Afghanistan

Alex DeWaal, a colleague of mine at the Social Science Research Council, has just published an interesting piece called, “The Price of Peace” in Prospect. In it he argues that if NATO and the western powers are to achieve their objectives in Afghanistan they need to understand and work within the political patronage system that dominates the country.
